Maasai School Project
The Maasai community was running a School themselves under the Tree for the past three years, before Moyo Primary School opened on 23 August 2021.
The students, the three teachers, and other staff are all Maasai people from the Olgulului area, Amboseli.
The School is built far out in the bush, and there is basically nothing around it except for some Maasai bomas and wildlife. There are three classrooms for 30 students in each classroom, and space for 90 students in total. Our goal is to build a complete Primary School.
The three classes we have now are PP1, PP2 and Grade 1. We will focus on these students as they go through the primary education. We will add more classes when we get funding to build more classrooms. The students are now able to follow the Kenyan curriculum because of the donated resources.
Before this Project started, they attended School only half day and went home to eat by noon. They also had to help out at home and graze the cows. They are now getting a warm School meal every day thanks to our supporters, and are able to stay full days at School. This is the only way they can get through all the learning requirements during the School year.
The three Teachers do not have the formal teacher trainings, but are now all enrolled in part time Teacher Education.
Jacob Parit Noomek, who was managing the building process together with Taran, is now the Daily Manager/Principal at the School. He is following up with work that needs to be done, and following up with parents and the rest of the Maasai staff.
We also have a Security guard, a cook, and a cleaner. In total, we have seven Maasai staff employed at Moyo Primary School.
Our focus is that this is a Maasai School. Empowering the children, their parents and the Maasai community. Most people in the area have not had the chance to go to School themselves, and they appreciate that the new generation is able to get Education. Maasai people are proud of their Culture, and we therefore decided to make the School uniforms with Maasai shukas. The intention is to teach the children to be proud of their culture as they are getting exposed to other cultures through their Education.
Moyo Primary School is a success as we are now providing proper Education for 90 children, in less than a year. These children would not normally have been able to go to School. We are relying on donations, and hope you will contribute making a difference for these Maasai students far out in the bush.
